Sun in Cancer: what it says about Ernest Hemingway
Ernest Hemingway's Cancer Sun seems paradoxical for a man famous for machismo and stoicism — until you understand that Cancer's hard shell protects the softest interior. Cancer is ruled by the Moon, planet of emotion and memory, and Hemingway's spare prose is an attempt to contain and control overwhelming feeling. The iceberg theory — showing only the surface while depths remain hidden — is pure Cancerian defense. His themes of war, loss, and wounded men are Cancer processing trauma. The drinking, the bravado, the bullfighting were shells to protect vulnerability. The tragedy is that the shell finally cracked.
