Biography
Frida Kahlo (1907–1954) was a Mexican painter known for her many portraits, self-portraits, and works inspired by Mexican nature and artifacts. Her paintings often had strong autobiographical elements and dealt with themes of identity, postcolonialism, gender, class, and race in Mexican society. She was married to muralist Diego Rivera. Despite lifelong health problems following a bus accident in her youth, she became an icon of Mexican national identity and feminist art.
Sun in Cancer: what it says about Frida Kahlo
Frida Kahlo's Cancer Sun transforms personal pain into universal symbol. Cancer is ruled by the Moon — the planet of emotion, the body, and the private interior world made visible. Kahlo's self-portraits are Cancerian in their raw emotional honesty: she paints her broken body, her tears, her bleeding heart without metaphor or distance. Cancer governs the womb and fertility, and Kahlo's paintings are haunted by her inability to carry a child to term. The Cancerian need to create and nurture found outlet in art. Her work is domestic and intimate even when it's surreal — she painted her inner world as if it were her home.
