☯ I Ching Hexagram Meaning

21. Biting Through
Shì Kè · Fire over Thunder
Judgment

Biting Through favors decisive action to remove whatever obstruction stands between intention and result, like a jaw closing firmly around what blocks it. Legal clarity and firm justice bring success here; delaying the necessary confrontation, or softening it too much, only lets the obstacle harden further.

Image

Thunder and lightning together, sudden and illuminating. In the same way, ancient rulers clarified their laws and made punishments clear in advance, using firm, transparent structure to prevent problems rather than merely reacting to them after the fact.

Meaning

Something concrete is standing between you and what you are trying to accomplish — a conflict left unresolved, a boundary left unstated, a problem that needs direct handling rather than more patience. Biting Through names the obstruction plainly and asks you to deal with it head-on.

This energy favors clarity over avoidance: naming the actual issue, setting a firm boundary, or resolving a dispute decisively rather than letting it fester. The traditional caution is fairness — decisive action works when it is just and proportionate, not simply forceful for its own sake.

What obstruction have you been softening or avoiding that actually needs a direct, fair resolution now?
