☯ I Ching Hexagram Meaning

26. Great Taming
Dà Chù · Mountain over Heaven
Judgment

Great Taming favors perseverance and represents real strength held in careful restraint, like a great store of power gathered and disciplined before it is released. Crossing the great water, taking on something genuinely difficult, brings success here, because the strength being tamed is substantial enough to meet the challenge.

Image

Heaven is contained within the mountain, vast power held by something solid and unmoving. In the same way, a person of real capacity studies the words and deeds of the past extensively, gathering and disciplining their own accumulated strength rather than releasing it carelessly.

Meaning

You have been building real capability — skill, resources, knowledge, reputation — and the current task is restraint, not release: holding that strength in reserve until the right moment rather than spending it the moment it becomes available. Great Taming describes power that is genuinely substantial precisely because it has not been rushed into use.

This energy asks for disciplined patience: keep developing, keep studying, keep gathering, and trust that the accumulated strength will matter more when it is finally, deliberately applied. Great capacity poorly timed is wasted; the same capacity, held and released at the right moment, accomplishes something lasting.

What strength have you been building that is ready to be used, but would serve you better held a little longer?
