What your birth chart shows

A natal chart is a map of the sky at the exact moment and place you were born. Astropractice calculates it in seven views you can switch between once you press Calculate:

• Chart wheel — the whole sky as a circle, with the planets on the signs and house cusps they occupied.
• Personality — a reading built from your Sun, Moon and Ascendant together.
• Planets in signs — what each placement says about how that part of you expresses itself.
• Planets in houses — which area of life each planet acts in.
• Cusps in signs — the sign sitting on each of the twelve house boundaries.
• Aspects — the angles between planets, and what the ease or tension between them means.
• AI synthesis — a written interpretation that reads the chart as a whole (Premium).

Questions people ask

Why does birth time matter so much?

The planets move slowly enough that a few hours barely moves them. The Ascendant does not: it advances a full degree every four minutes, and the house cusps travel with it. Get the time wrong by two hours and roughly one house division in six lands in a different sign. Your Sun and Moon signs will still be right; your Ascendant and everything house-based may not be.

What if I don't know my birth time?

The time field starts at 12:00, which is the honest compromise — it keeps the Moon within about half a degree of correct for most of the day, and the other planets closer still. Read the results as reliable for planets in signs and for aspects, and treat the Ascendant, Midheaven and every house placement as unusable until you find the real time. Birth certificates and hospital records are the usual sources.

How is the time zone worked out?

Choose your city from the place field and the calculator fills in latitude, longitude and that location's standard time zone from its own geographic database. Tick DST yourself if daylight saving was in force on your birth date: historical daylight-saving rules varied by country and by year, so that one is left to you rather than guessed.

Which house system do you use?

Placidus, the system most widely used in modern Western astrology. It divides the houses by time rather than by equal space, which is why house sizes differ across a chart and why the division becomes distorted at very high latitudes.
