Hazel takes its name from the hazel tree, long associated in folk tradition with wisdom and protective qualities -- hazel wood was often used for divining rods and walking sticks. The name is commonly read as carrying a grounded, sheltering quality, wisdom understood as practical rather than purely intellectual.
