How it works:
Each day after your birth corresponds to one year of your life.
Born 1 Jan 1980 + targeting 1 Jan 2010 = 30 years = progressed chart for day 30 after birth (31 Jan 1980).

What to look for:
• Progressed Moon moves ~12° per year (sign changes every ~2.5 years)

How secondary progressions work

The method is old and deliberately simple: the sky one day after you were born describes your first year of life, two days after describes your second, and so on. To find the chart for your fortieth year, an astrologer reads the sky on the fortieth day of your life. This calculator uses the exact ratio rather than whole days, so a date halfway through a year lands halfway through a progressed day.

Nothing is claimed to move the planets. Progressions are a symbolic timing technique — a way of mapping the slow unfolding of a birth chart onto a life, and they are read alongside transits rather than instead of them.

What to look at first

The progressed Moon is the fastest hand on the clock: it changes sign roughly every two and a half years and completes a full circuit in about twenty-seven, which makes it the usual marker for shifting emotional chapters. The progressed Sun moves about a degree a year, so it changes sign around every thirty — a genuinely rare event that tends to coincide with a change in direction. Aspects the progressed chart makes back to the natal chart are what date the events.

Questions people ask

How is this different from transits?

Transits are where the planets actually are today, moving against your birth chart from outside. Progressions are internal: a symbolic unfolding of the chart you already have. Transits tend to describe events arriving; progressions describe the person they arrive to having changed. See current transits for the other half.

Does birth time matter here?

More than usual. The progressed Ascendant and Midheaven, and every progressed house placement, inherit the birth time and then amplify the error as the chart advances. Progressed planets and the aspects between them stay usable with an approximate time; the angles do not.

Which date should I enter?

Today, to see where the chart currently stands. A past date you already understand is the better way to test the technique — progressions are easiest to trust in hindsight, against a year whose events you can already name.
