☯ I Ching Hexagram Meaning

38. Opposition
Kuí · Fire over Lake
Judgment

Opposition brings good fortune only in small matters, describing two forces pulling in different directions, like fire rising while a lake sinks, unable to fully unite yet not entirely separate either. Genuine progress here comes through small, careful steps of reconciliation rather than any attempt at forcing full agreement.

Image

Fire rises while the lake settles downward, two natures moving in opposite ways. In the same way, a person of insight holds shared ground with others while still respecting real individual differences, finding common purpose without pretending disagreement does not exist.

Meaning

You are dealing with someone, or some situation, that pulls in a genuinely different direction than you do — a disagreement in values, style, or goals that is not going to resolve into full agreement anytime soon. Opposition names this honestly, and it does not promise unity; it promises small workable progress instead.

This energy asks you to look for the narrow overlap that does exist, rather than insisting on complete alignment before you can cooperate at all. Small gestures of goodwill, modest compromises, and patient tolerance of real difference tend to accomplish more here than any attempt to force the other side around to your view.

Where could you make small, genuine progress with someone you disagree with, without needing them to agree with you entirely?

✦ Astro Quote
Immense prosperity is portended, when the lords of the triplicity of the luminaries shall have virtue in an angle or succedent house, and be in their proper places, remote from the aspects of the infortunes; and if the lord of the ascendant shall be well seated also, the happiness shall be the more and the greater. - William Lilly (1602.-1681.)
